The Icelandic Travel Industry Association´s Award for Occupational Education for the Year 2011

On February 18th, 2011 Kynnisferdir – Reykjavik Excursions received The Icelandic Travel Industry Association´s award for occupational education for the year 2011. The award was handed over by the minister for the travel industry and was granted for the company´s educational and training programmes, for well presented manuals and for being on top in employees‘ job satisfaction and low employee turnover. The educational plan is for the years 2010-2012 and concerns all employees of Kynnisferdir – Reykjavik Excursions, in one way or another. Just ahead is a „Security Week“, where yearly continuing First Aid courses will be held, fire drills will be contucted and all members of staff, male and female, are urged to go for a check-up at the Cancer Society, with special attention on Breast and Prostate cancer. The cost of the check-up is paid by the company.

Hansabuss Used Their Huge Fleet of Vehicles to Accommodate the Meeting Participants

Hansabuss Hired 165 New Drivers for This Service!

The Informal Meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers, which took place in Tallinn, Estonia on April 22 and 23, was serviced by Hansabuss, GPN’s partner in Estonia. Hansabuss was the sole transportation provider for this event.

Planning for the event began in October of 2009, and the main team consisted of Hansabuss, the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Estonian Police. Hansabuss had to hire 165 new drivers, who drove 162 different vehicles. They logged an impressive 8.000 working hours.

Hansabuss is proud to have provided transportation for such an important world-class event. The staff learned a lot from this experience, and is ready to take on even bigger challenges in the future!

GPN Cyprus/Aeolos Provides Transportation for Pope’s Visit to Cyprus

The Pope visited Cyprus on June 4th and 5th with 36 members of his entourage. The Pope’s visit included a meeting with President Demetris Christofias and his wife Elsi, a visit to the St. Maron school to greet thousands of enthusiastic followers, as well as meetings with members of the Holy Synod and Maronite Archbishop Youssef Soueif. The Pope blessed a small olive tree, which will be planted at the Paphos airport in remembrance of his historic visit. At his farewell ceremony on June 5th, he called for lasting peace in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Aeolos Travel, GPN’s member in Cyprus, was proud to provide VIP motor coach transportation for the Pope’s entourage. See pictures above…

Last week, GPN attended the IMEX in Frankfurt, the trade show dedicated to MICE travel. We had a lot of productive meetings there, and overall were very impressed with the fair, which was well-organized and had a wide variety of exhibitors.

All Quiet on the Northern Front

The world media has for the last weeks been reporting on volcanic eruptions in Iceland and the consequences it has had on air traffic around Europe. Among the accounts there are several written by people that seemingly have little or no idea what´s going on. Pictures of people shovelling ash from roof tops with their faces covered by masks have been published all round, making it look like it is part of everyday life in Iceland. This is far from the truth. Everyday life in Iceland is as normal as can be, considering the circumstances. The airplanes are flying again and the airports are open. Spring is tiptoeing nearby and migrating birds like the arctic tern and the golden plover have already come over for their summer habitat. Daffodils are blooming in parks and gardens and multicoloured crocuses flourish, a little late for all standards, but admired and loved by onlookers. The blue colour of the mountains surrounding the capital is slowly taking over the white crust of winter´s snow. The volcano is however still spouting ash and fumes, but not to the extent that it did before. Experts say that it could stop tomorrow, after a month or in a year.

As of May 1, 2010 Kynnisferðir/Reykjavik Excursions will be operated separately – the bus and coach part of the company will from now on be known as Kynnisferðir and the travel agency part will be run under the Reykjavik Excursions logo. The management of the company will be the same as before the separation.

In Iceland we look forward to spring and summer, hoping the aftermaths of the eruption will be minimal. We also look forward to GPN´s meeting in Reykjavík in the early fall and we´ll do our best to make the stay a memorable one.

White as Snow, Red as Blood and Black as Ebony

This phrase from Snow White comes to mind when looking at the volcanic eruption on Fimmvorduhals in Iceland. The circumstances are sub-real; bitterly cold northern winds biting, glaciers visible all around and yet this wonderful display of exotic colours. The fumes from the crater and the steam from the boiling glacier blow graciously into the wind and disappear. With April ahead we flow along and keep track with what is going on. Will it last a long time or will it stop shortly? No one can tell but everyone who takes part in the adventure hopes it will go on forever.
