RDA AGM & Annual Conference 26th – 28th April 2012 in Graz – Steps towards Europe

This year’s RDA AGM was held in the Austrian Steiermark in the beautiful and historic Graz Congress Center. RDA President Richard Eberhardt’s presidential address was followed by RDA CEO Dieter Gauf’s summary report on activities and developments since the 2011 AGM in Hamburg and by RDA Treasurer Bernhard Kirschbaum’s financial report.

The RDA Board of Directors was unanimously acquitted by the membership. Elections were held: Konrad Behringer was confirmed as RDA Vice-President, Hannes Staggl and Heinrich Marti were re-elected as members of the RDA Board of Directors for another three-year term as well. The first day ended with a pleasant evening in a sunset panorama restaurant situated in the grounds of the Schlossberg castle high above the world-famous red rooftops of Graz.
Day two was dominated by three central themes: personnel management, professional development and European perspectives. The over 200 participants were officially greeted by Mr. Othmar Karas, Vice-President of the European Parliament. He promised to continue looking after coach tourism interests. Only in the past week had tax increases on diesel fuel been rejected by the European Parliament. Coach tourism, he said, brought people in Europe together and in doing so made a valuable contribution to European identity and cohesion.

RDA President Richard Eberhardt stated that we could no longer conceive of daily life and work in Europe without consideration of this year’s conference motto “Steps towards Europe”. Europe was a natural home for all involved in coach and group tourism. Europe, however, was both a chance and a risk. Brussels was currently a synonym for additional burdens, excessive bureaucracy and over-regulation. Instead, Brussels should provide impulses for progress, prosperity and innovations. Special coach tourism concerns included additional charges for coach access, barriers to free access to city centres and visitor attractions and undifferentiated treatment of coaches in EU legislative processes, especially vis-à-vis goods transport vehicles. Chances were available everywhere where companies could freely operate, in places where fresh ideas and positive energy was appreciated and well received.

Future personnel shortages and how to make our industry more attractive to young people was a major theme discussed by Prof. Dr. Volker Stein, Siegen University Commerce Dept., and Martin Wendlandt, coach business consultant for forty years and industry expert . Prof. Stein stated that major challenges for the tourism sector still lay ahead. The crux of the matter was to recruit, motivate and retain qualified staff. Personnel should not be reduced to a simple cost factor but viewed as capital and human assets – the very basis of future business success.

Martin Wendlandt illustrated how coach companies were being hit by current demographic changes. The number of coach drivers over 55 years of age had increased rapidly – and drivers were essential for this particular business. Coach operators should employ more females and migrants and take-pro-active measures to actively recruit and train necessary personnel, e.g. via online advertising and banners on coaches. Training and further development were crucial areas that had hitherto been largely ignored – especially by smaller enterprises. A positive image of the sector in the public realm is essential and of utmost importance in attracting new people. There is no shortage of competition in Europe for potential employees and clever individuals. Given the familial and flexible nature of medium-sized coach holiday enterprises, this is a challenge that was by no means insurmountable. Young people, in particular, should also be actively spoken to via their social media networks.

This highly topical subject was followed by the whole issue of dismantling bureaucracy and bureaucratic hurdles to carrying out coach holiday business in Europe, e.g. environment zones and coach lockouts. Speakers included Prof. Dr. Tim Sterzenbach from Worms University of Applied Sciences Tourism Dept. In order to effect solutions, it was important that the RDA continue with its lobbying initiatives at all levels and that a positive image of our branch be inculcated into the hearts and minds of officials who made decisions which directly affected the operations of our industry and its business effectiveness. The former Minister-President of the Federal German State of Thuringia, Mr. Dieter Althaus, elucidated upon the political dimensions of dismantling bureaucratic hindrances and the importance of citizens and bureaucracies working together – from local to EU levels – to communicate with each other to solve problems and realize future opportunities.
Ms. Mag. Beate Appinger-Ziegler explained the workings of Austrian road toll ASFINAG while Mr. Mag. Paul Blachnik re-iterated the position of coach companies. Mr. Christian Leetz, from the editorial team of the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitungsgruppe WAZ and Mr. Sepp Zotter, owner of Zotter chocolate factory in Riegersburg, discoursed upon the more pleasant and culinary aspects of travelling by coach. The second evening was rounded off in the heart of old Graz with an absolutely splendid gala dinner in the aula of the historic University of Graz, accompanied by excellently under-stated, highly humorous and wonderfully delivered live entertainment.

The 62nd RDA AGM and joint RDA / gbk Conference will take place from 11th to 13th April 2013 in the southern German and medieval city of Augsburg.

RAF TRANS-GPN POLAND becomes the official transportation company for European Football Championship EURO 2012

For supporting this huge project Raf Trans company bought 27 brand new Setra and Mercedes coaches to carry football national teams, referees, technical staff and guests of the UEFA Cup.

The coach of each team will be marked with colors of the country and will serve to support the transfers from the airport to the hotel and for trainings as well, to the stadiums and players after matches. Pictures from official coaches presentation in teams national colors will be posted after 16 May 2012.

Where is the Spring?

Soon its May and still cool mornings and rainy afternoon. We had four weeks ago temperatures up to 24 and people were running around in shorts, T-shirt and beach shoes. Maybe that was the summer and we have now autumn. Time to think about Christmas presents :) !!

Forgetting the temperatures, we see that the high season is coming.

Emile Weber had a big movement this week due to the ANZAC days out in Flanders, the Floriade tours have started, the preparations for the Olympics are at high pressure as well as for the Europiade – a happing for walkers where we expect 5000 people to come.

CAR TOUR, our GPN Spanish member, presented their new 5 vehicles

CAR TOUR, our GPN Spanish member, presented their new 5 vehicles recently incorporated to its fleet, with major presence of our Strategic Alliance partner IRIZAR.

The vehicles are the following:

- 3 units IRISBUS-IVECO, 3 axle, with IRIZAR model i6, 14 and 15 meters with 63 and 71 seats respectively.

- 1 unit, IRISBUS-IVECO, 10.3 meter, with NOGE body and 35 seats

- 1 unit, minibus, IRISBUS-IVECO, with INDCAR WING model body, and 28 seats.

2011 good year for the VDL Groep

Considering the economic circumstances, 2011 was a good year for the VDL Groep of Eindhoven. The combined turnover rose by 17% from €1.472 billion in 2010 to €1.719 billion in 2011. The consolidated turnover for 2011 will come out to approximately €1.575 billion, compared to €1.354 billion in 2010. The net result amounted to €66.0 million, compared to €76.6 million in 2010. The number of employees remained virtually unchanged: 7,135 at the end of 2011 (2010: 7,126).

SUBCONTRACTING

The turnover in the subcontracting division rose from €751 million in 2010 to €918 million in 2011.
This turnover growth of 22% is largely due to the strong semiconductor, LED and solar energy market and the recovering automotive industry. The subcontracting division achieved a positive result in 2011. The order portfolio remained stable and, at around €240 million, is currently well
filled. VDL expects the turnover of the subcontracting division to stabilize or decrease slightly in 2012.

BUSES & COACHES

The turnover in the buses & coaches division fell from €426 million in 2010 to €405 million in 2011 (-5%). Particularly in the Dutch and Belgian public transport sector, almost no buses are being replaced by governments, as cut backs are being made across the board. Too few sales combined with large investments in product development and production optimization have led to high costs and a negative result. The order portfolio is now stable, however, and amounts to around €200 million. The investments seem to be bearing fruit, yet the bus market remains a difficult one and continues to suffer the effects of the crisis. However, having won two international prizes for its new coach and public transport bus, VDL expects the buses & coaches division to have a better
year than in 2011.

FINISHED PRODUCTS

The turnover in the finished products division rose by 34% from €295 million in 2010 to €396 million in 2011. Here, too, the positive influence of the automotive industry is noticeable. Particularly in the passenger vehicle industry, large orders were won for the delivery of production automation systems. The result of the finished products division was positive. The order portfolio is still expanding slightly and currently has a value of around €180 million. VDL expects slight growth of this division in 2012.

EXPECTATIONS FOR 2012

2012 has gotten off to a reasonably good start for the VDL Groep, with a number of large orders, but the expectations remain conservative. With an eye toward the difficult situation in Europe, a cautious forecast is in order; the prediction is therefore that the result in 2012 will be nearly the same as that for 2011.

In the subcontracting division, VDL specialises in metalworking, mechatronic systems and system supply, plastics processing, and surface treatment. The bus & coach division includes chassis & chassis modules, coaches, public transport buses, mini & midi buses, special projects and second-hand buses. The finished products division comprises suspension systems for the automotive industry, heating, cooling and air-technical systems, production automation systems,systems for the oil, gas and petrochemical industry, systems for the agricultural sector, sunbeds,roof boxes, container handling equipment, cigar-making and packaging machines, components for
bulk handling and dust extraction installations and systems for explosion and fire protection.

Germany’s coach and group travel operators start planning and contracting for the following tourism year in spring and in early summer. The highlight of their purchasing year is the annual RDA-Workshop in Cologne (17th to 19th July 2012).

Germany’s coach and group travel operators tend to divide their offers into “must have” offers, “should have” offers and “could have” offers. If, for example, you are currently a “could have” offer, then your task is to move up the scale to become a “should have” offer. Contracting for the following year is usually completed by late-August. Offers, catalogues and programmes are published in autumn and early winter – both print and online, customers primarily deciding upon their following year’s vacation over Christmas and the New Year holidays.

When working with German coach and group travel operators it is important to ensure that most if not all your information, website and materials are in German. German-speaking personnel are also to be highly recommended. Your offers should feature a clear structure with precise and transparent language. They should include basic package components, optional package components and commissionable net prices (high & low season).

Tour operator commission rates in Germany range from 15 to 20 percent. Commission rates for travel agents range from 10 to 12 percent. Once agreed, rates should never be undermined by price dumping later on. Your offers should also include advice on conditions and terms of payment, cancellations policy, complimentary elements, free places, discounts and seasonal specials if available (e.g. Easter and New Year).

All of the above should be backed-up by quality high resolution and iconic images that will enhance catalogues / websites and awaken German customer desires. A great thing about our business is that a really good picture literally can sell a trip. Photos and programme offers should also be accompanied by customer-oriented descriptions suitable for inclusion in flyers, websites & catalogues with easily understandable and Google searchable catch words and phrases (SEO).
