New Jumbo Bus for GPN Finland!

Reissu Ruoti has a brand new coach, a 66-seater Scania OmniExpress 360.  It is the biggest coach in the company’s  50-plus- year history. Group sizes have grown in Finland, and the need for big coaches has also increased over the last few years.   The new  66-seater coach is 14,95 meters long.  It is called “Jumbo” because of its large size.  The local company Lahden Autokori Oy made this coach especially for Reissu Ruoti, and it will be most of the summer season in Helsinki for cruise tourist shore excursions.

At the beginning of June, Finland has a bus exhibition in the city of Lahti, where you can see our Jumbo on display.  The Bus2011 exhibition brings together coach companies from all over the Finland every year.  This year, it will be held in Lahti.  There you can also see many of Charter Finland and GPN Finland members. If you are interested in knowing more about the Bus2011 Lahti exhibition, you can contact Bus Travel Oy Reissu Ruoti, Tel. +3583 7878120, or reservation@reissuruoti.fi

Morn in May

Summer knocked on Reykjavik´s door on May 2 at 12:30. The previous day, Labour Day, it snowed. As soon as summer arrived and the temperature rose to 11°C, the saturnine inhabitants of the capital shed their moody attire and smiled at the sun. Young and old, girls and boys were all of a sudden skipping ropes and playing outside the houses without being clad as they were going to the North Pole. Some say it will be a good summer – others are not so optimistic. The Icelanders love all kinds of rhymed, four line stanzas and some people know an infinite number of such rhymes for every occasion. Those who can ad lib deliver rhymes are considered clever and wise, the ones you can read backwards are the most famous – giving an opposite meaning to the words. A clergyman that lived in the North of Iceland at the beginning of the twentieth century wrote rhymes in Icelandic and English as he had studied in Scotland and lived in Canada for years. One of his best known rhymes is about an unknown girl – maybe his immortal beloved. The clergyman however remained a bachelor all his life. She is fine as morn in May. Mild, divine and clever. Like a shining summer day. She is mine forever. Agnar is busy as ever having all his busses prepared for our summer guests – we have added 8 brand new busses to our fleet – 3 VDL Bova coaches and 5 MD Sprinters. Hopefully there will be a lot going on in Iceland to tempt people to come and see us and travel with us – even though we cannot promise an exciting volcaninc outburst like last year. We send all our friends at GPN our best wishes for a wonderful summer, may your business „bloom and grow forever“!

GPN, the Network of the Best Bus Companies in the World, Proves its Mettle

For the last 3 years, since its inception in July of 2006, Global Passenger Network, the organization that brings together the best bus companies in the world, has been constantly improving its international products and services.  The recent events caused by the volcanic eruption in Iceland has given GPN its first real chance to prove itself as a globally-acting network.

In the two hours after the crisis began, GPN was able to coordinate from a central point coach activities in all areas of Europe and other regions, such as Asia.  Within hours, GPN received hundreds of requests for help from all corners of the world.  A small and efficient team of GPN specialists, experienced in logistics and all aspects of bus travel, coordinated help for stranded clients through its national member companies, utilizing a wide variety of vehicles, from minivans to minibuses to Gran Turismo coaches.  The practice of transfer optimization, or the filling of empty legs, long a GPN specialty, was especially helpful in this situation.

Through this experience, GPN has been able to successfully implement policies put in place by the Board of Directors in the last 2 years, including: a 24-hour response time, guaranteed high quality and standards and strict adherence to the EU regulations regarding driving times and security.  Our member companies have demonstrated that they can serve the needs of various clients, including large international clients, within just a few hours, even in an emergency situation.  As the travel industry gets back on its feet after these difficult days, GPN will further develop its position as the network offering the best bus service in the world.

Importance of coach tourism for Germany confirmed

Federal Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel invited select leaders of the German tourism industry for a discussion at the Chancellery in Berlin on September 10th. RDA President Richard Eberhardt represented the interests of coach tourism and its partners, as well as interests of gbk-classified coach companies.

The tourism representative for the Federal Government, Ernst Hinsken, member of the Federal Parliament, Petra Hedorfer, executive chairwoman of the German National Tourist Office, and Reinhard Meyer, President of the DTV (the German Association of Tourism), explained the importance of incoming business for German tourism.  Klaus Laepple, president of the BTW, pointed out the importance of tourism for Germany. At the moment,  it is business travel which suffers most from the present crisis, that is why the market is divided. Merkel commended the farsighted behaviour of German people, who have not yet been unsettled by the crisis.

RDA President Richard Eberhardt pointed out the important economic and socio-political functions of coach tourism. In Germany alone, around 120 million people travel by coach for vacation, tours and day trips. Coach tourism contributes considerably to German tourism as a whole and to incoming business as well. Federal Chancellor Merkel has been impressed by the economic power of tourism and the far-reaching dimensions of aggregate value added, and she referred to the touristic guidelines of Federal Government.
In preparation for the discussion, the RDA presented a summary of the most important demands of the sector, which shows the importance of coach tourism.  A few of these demands are free access for coaches in environmental protection zones, reduction of fiscal discrimination, and permanent release from toll charges, a theme which often is discussed before elections.

The coach is the most environmentally friendly means of public transportation, with the lowest emission levels of all motor vehicles, but it suffers from great fiscal disadvantages in competition with German Railways and flights. The RDA strongly emphasized the disadvantages of undifferentiated inclusion of the coach in the regulations of environmental protection zones, which can only be described as ecologically and economically counterproductive.  Eberhardt sustains that, with the current policies, figurative walls will be constructed around cities.  This kind of politics is not worthwhile, not at all. Dr. Angela Merkel promised to seek a solution to this problem, although it is subject to European legislation.

Coach companies, tour operators and their partners are mostly small and medium-sized companies, which contribute to the economy’s growth, and ensure hundred of thousands of jobs, stated the RDA President.

During the discussion, RDA President Richard Eberhardt, Dr. Rembert Euling, chairman of the REWE Tourism, Ernst Fischer, President of DEHOGA, Michael Frenzel, executive chairman of TUI, Roland Mack, managing partner of Europa-Park, and Wolfgang Steinbruck, President of bdo, talked about the status of tourism in the face of the present crisis.

Dr. Angela Merkel has showed great interest in the problem of discrimination against coaches.  In his summary of the meeting, Richard Eberhardt stated that Federal Chancellor Merkel has said “Yes” to German tourism.

Ambassatours Gray Line to Launch First-Of-Its-Kind IDLE-FREE Campaign & Bus on National Clean Air Day in Canada, June 3

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA–(Marketwire – June 3, 2009) -

Editors Note: A video and photo are included with this press release.

Ambassatours Gray Line, Atlantic Canada’s leading tour-bus company will publicly launch itsIDLE-FREE campaign on national Clean Air Day, Wednesday, June 3, 4:00PM at Westmount Elementary School, in Halifax. The company plans to be the first tour bus company in Canada with a proactive reduced-idling strategy, selling drivers and passengers based on messages featuring children.

Company president Dennis Campbell invites the media and the public to view its IDLE-FREE “ambassador’s bus”, featuring “Rachel”, the grade two poster-girl of The Children’s Clean Air Network. He will also be answering questions regarding this unique education and awareness program developed in partnership with The Children’s Clean Air Network. Rachel and her family are planning to attend.

“The media and public will see a big IDLE-FREE bus on Clean Air Day, but we’ve been working behind the scenes to train our drivers on the importance of cutting idle-time with The Children’s Clean Air Network for weeks now,” says Campbell. “Our drivers are buying-in and we’re confident we’ll be able to walk-the-talk over time on this public commitment.”

“Our approach is simple and it’s proven effective; when drivers see and hear from children on smog and global warming, attitudes change relatively quickly,” says Ron Zima of The Children’s Clean Air Network. “This was a perfect fit for Ambassatours Gray Line, which was already promoting itself as an ideal way to travel and leave cars at home. At the same time, savings to their bottom line and cuts in greenhouse gas and pollutants will be substantial.”
